The Israeli government gave the final approval to the deal to buy U.S.-made fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jets, the Cabinet's press service said in a statement.
The deal was approved by Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak on August 15.
"The purchase of the world's most advanced military jets is an important step in strengthening the military potential of the Israeli state," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quoted as saying.
The statement gives no details of the deal, but according to Israeli media reports the first batch of 20 planes would be delivered to Israel in 2015-17. The deal, worth some $3 million will be paid using U.S. military assistance.
Tel Aviv earlier said that the purchase of F-35 fighters would effectively eliminate the threat from Russian-made S-300 air defense systems because a series of computer simulations had clearly demonstrated that new U.S. stealth fighters outperform the Russian missiles.
The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is a single-seat, single-engine stealth multirole fighter that can perform close air support, tactical bombing, and air defense missions.

Indonesia's Air Force chief of staff Marshal Imam Sufaat said on Friday his country planned to buy six more Sukhoi fighter jets from Russia, the Jakarta Post reported.
He said the purchase would be on the Defense Ministry's long-term agenda, but was not sure when the plan would be implemented.
"The existing squadron of Sukhois remains insufficient to give a deterrent effect given our vast territory," Imam told the Antara news agency.
He said the proposal was already approved by the country's president, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Indonesia bought three Russian fighter jets in 2003. The $300 million contract signed in August 2007 stipulated the delivery of six Su-30MK fighter planes. Three aircraft were delivered in February 2009, another two were handed over to Indonesia on September 10, and one was taken to Indonesia on Thursday.

First Airbus Military Tanker for RAF Takes Off

16 September 2010 -- The first A330 MRTT Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) for the UK Royal Air Force has taken off on its maiden flight from the Airbus Military facility at Getafe, Madrid following its conversion.

The aircraft, converted from a basic A330-200 by Airbus Military and powered by two Rolls- Royce Trent 700 turbofans, took to the air at 11.41 local time (09.41 UTC).

Chief Pilot FSTA Tim Butler captained the flight supported by Chief Test Pilot Eduardo Cuadrado. The engineering team on board included: Test Flight Engineer Santiago Manso, and Flight Test Engineers Jorge Fuentes and Alfonso Sopeña.

The crew will perform a routine acceptance flight profile and no refuelling activity will be undertaken. The duration of the flight will be at the test team's discretion.

A330 MRTT

The Airbus Military A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) is the most capable new generation aircraft in this category flying and available today. The large 111 tonnes/ 245,000 lb basic fuel capacity of the successful A330-200 airliner, from which it is derived, enables the A330 MRTT to excel in Air-to-Air Refuelling missions without the need for any additional fuel tanks. The A330 MRTT is offered with a choice of proven air-to-air refuelling systems including an advanced Airbus Military Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS), and/or a pair of under- wing hose and drogue pods, and/or a Fuselage Refuelling Unit.

Thanks to its true wide-body fuselage, the A330 MRTT can also be used as a pure transport aircraft able to carry up to 300 passengers, or a payload of up to 45 tonnes/99,000 lb. It can also easily be converted to accommodate up to 130 stretchers for Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC). To-date, a total of 28 A330 MRTTs have been ordered by four customers (Australia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom), with one (Saudi Arabia) having already placed a repeat order.

Germany Grounds Eurofighter Combat Jets on Ejector Seat Concern

Sept. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Germany’s air force grounded all 55 of its Eurofighter combat jets because of safety concerns over the functioning of the pilot ejector seats.

The Eurofighters, produced by European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co., have been grounded since yesterday and the German Luftwaffe is working closely with industry officials to identify the problem, a Defense Ministry spokesman said in Berlin on customary condition of anonymity.

The groundings are a flight-safety issue because the functioning of the ejector seat during an emergency can’t be guaranteed in certain circumstances, the spokesman said, without elaborating.

Countries operating military aircraft that have had accidents generally ground planes not being used operationally to allow time for an investigation, said Eurofighter spokesman Marco Valerio. Eurofighter is working with customers to understand the issues and resolve them, he said.

The Eurofighter problem is another setback for the German military’s efforts to enhance its equipment in missions from Afghanistan to Somalia as the government embarks on one the biggest overhauls of the military in the post-World War II era. Steps include reducing the number of soldiers to as few as 170,000 and halting or suspending conscription.

In May, the Defense Ministry curbed test runs of some NH90 military-transport helicopters made by Eurocopter SA after engine faults emerged in flight maneuvers. The malfunction may add to a four-year delay in delivery of the final version of the NH90 to Germany, the ministry said at the time.

The Eurofighter grounding was first reported by Financial Times Deutschland, which linked the measure to a crash in Spain at the end of last month. In that accident, a Saudi Arabian air force lieutenant-colonel was killed when a Eurofighter crashed at Moron air base, near Seville, the Spanish Defense Ministry said on Aug. 24.

The Saudi officer was in Moron as part of a training agreement between the Spanish and Saudi Arabian military.
