President Lee Myung-bak will visit Indonesia and Malaysia from Thursday to Friday to attend a forum on democracy and hold summits with the leaders of the Southeast Asian nations, Cheong Wa Dae announced Monday.

Lee initially planned to leave on early Wednesday and return home on late Saturday, but shortened the trip due to mounting tensions on the Korean Peninsula following North Korea’s artillery attack on a South Korean border island on Nov. 23.

Lee will arrive in Bali, an Indonesian resort island, Thursday, where he will participate in the Bali Democracy Forum and hold bilateral talks with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Lee and Yudhoyono will discuss ways to promote a Strategic Partnership between Seoul and Jakarta and discuss bilateral issues, including cooperation in the defense industry, Cheong Wa Dae said.

South Korea is currently competing with Russia and the Czech Republic to export its T-50 trainer jets to Indonesia. Jakarta plans to order 16 aircraft, enough for one squadron, and the successful bidder will be announced soon, according to the country’s defense minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro.

Also on the summit agenda are the security condition on the Korean Peninsula and ways for cooperation on the global stage, such as ASEAN and G-20, it added.

Lee will head to Kuala Lumpur later on Thursday for a two-day state visit on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.

He will hold a summit with Prime Minister Najib Razak the following day on promoting relations between the two nations. The two sides will also sign a treaty on criminal and judicial cooperation, Cheong Wa Dae said.

Lee’s aides said he rescheduled the trip to Indonesia and Malaysia to make it as compact as possible to minimize his absence amid tense security conditions.

“President Lee mulled canceling his overseas trips this time, but decided to go in consideration of bilateral relations with the regional partners,” a presidential spokesman said.

In November, the Indonesian President visited Seoul to participate in a G20 summit despite his busy schedule at home in dealing with the aftermath of a volcanic eruption and earthquake.
