Budget for Indonesia's defense sector to rise significantly

Budget for Indonesia's defense sector will rise significantly to 1.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) from 0.9 percent, Kompas daily reported on Wednesday.

The increase is projected to build defense strength and weaponry for the country's military.

The decision was taken in a limited coordinating session of defense on Tuesday that was chaired by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the Defense Ministry.

In his remarks, President Yudhoyono admitted that policy to raise budget allocation for defense spending could not be done in the previous period of his administration as the government still focused on effort to recover economy while in the same time other sectors should be prioritized first.

"In line with increasing GDP and state budget, it is time now for us to increase defense budget significantly. We realized that for years our defense budget was small compared to other ASEAN countries," he said.
